“Can we go inside to talk?” Her tone was much more serious than usual.
“Is something wrong?” I asked, as soon as we were inside. “Is it the twins? Or Lester?”
“Nothing like that.”
“What is it then? You’re starting to scare me.”
“I have something to tell you which is bound to come as something of a shock.”
“It’s not my mother, is it?”
“No, I had to promise not to tell her. In fact, I had to promise not to tell anyone else.”
“What is it then? What’s happened?”
“Earlier today I received a message—.” She took a deep breath. “From your father.”
My legs gave way, and I slumped down onto the sofa.
“He wants to see you.”
